The $2.4 billion industry is a significant employer in regional NSW and Member for South Coast, Shelley Hancock has welcomed the plan.
“Demand for wood is healthy and growing. It is estimated that Australian demand for forest products will increase by around 43 per cent by 2040,” she said.
“With investment decisions in the forestry industry being made over long time frames, the Roadmap is about providing confidence to industry through a long term plan for growth and sustainability.”
The Roadmap will help achieve the NSW Government’s target of creating 150,000 new jobs, of which 30,000 will be based in regional NSW, increase the value of the primary industry sector by 30 per cent by 2020 and maintain key native forest values.
The Roadmap outlines a triple bottom line approach to achieving social, environmental and economic sustainability through specific actions under four priority pillars:
- Regulatory modernisation.
- Balancing supply and demand.
- Community understanding and confidence.
- Industry innovation and new markets.
The NSW Government will work with South Coast communities to develop, deliver and enforce a credible, effective, outcomes-focused and transparent forestry regulatory framework.
