Well we were due; especially after being spoilt rotten with consistent overhead waves. The weakened, lifeless swell that no one wanted finally came and set up shop for most of this past week as we endured 2ft peaks which replicated for four days straight.
Despite the lack of surf the days were simply gorgeous and it was hard not to make an excuse to get down to our golden sands and play like a herd of walruses just lapping up the rays and yelling meaningless racket at each other. But hold the phone, tomorrow morning you should be greeted with a brute of a swell which should bear hug our coastline and squeeze hard, so keep your step up board ripe and ready.
Mark Johnson didn't have to travel too far to enjoy his aquatic leisure time over the weekend. Despite living a short five-minute walk to the succulent Mollymook beach, the extremely fit Johno decided it would still be best to drive to conserve energy and rock out to power FM to psyche up before he attacked the miniscule waves. With the tide rising in his favour, a fun right-hander appeared and he managed to scrape together a few fun rides to walk up the beach happy and ready to rock out to some more Spice Girls songs.
A huge reminder that Ulladulla boardriders will be meeting this Sunday for their next event at Rennies beach at 7.30am. The following weekend is the Autumn Slash at Werri beach and with the majority of members competing plus 3/4 of our committee, we have decided to go a week early.
Big Jordy Smith won a leg-burning battle of a final at Bells, narrowly besting Caio Ibelli to clinch his first win at the iconic location Bells Beach. It was made even sweeter for Smith as he almost rang the bell the previous year in 2016, after finishing 2nd to Matt Wilkinson. The final was a cracker as the two natural footers went toe to toe. Caio Ibelli made a late charge in the second half of the final and got back to within striking distance of Smith's huge points total of 18.90. In fact, both finalists bagged 9-point rides in the final heat of the day. But in the end it was Smith who picked the better waves to take home the bacon.
