If you’ve noticed a smoky cloud hanging over the city, there’s nothing to fear. Smoke began settling around Ballarat just before 4pm with many people concerned about a potential fire nearby given the warm temperatures. The CFA were quick to assure residents the smoke was a result of several burn offs listed around the region. Burn offs were listed to take place around Smythesdale, Haddon, Yendon, Scotsburn, Scarsdale, Napoleons and several other locations about the Ballarat area. A slight change in wind or temperature has resulted in the smoke accumulating and dropping down to ground level, shrouding much of the city in a smoky haze. Planned fuel reduction burns near Linton and Beaufort in the past few days, and a small under-control bushfire near Enfield, have also thrown smoke up in to the atmosphere. Although the smoke is a result of planned burn offs, the CFA reminded residents that if they do see a fire, to call 000.
