This was the first cookery competition to be held by the Milton CWA in more than 15 years.
Judge Laurel Oke of the Nowra CWA branch said she was “impressed” with the line up of cakes presented.
“The judging was open allowing anyone who was interested to watch as each section was judged,” Johanne Holt said.
“During the judging, Laurel provided feedback on each of the entries along with tips she has learnt over the years to assist in trying to bake and present the perfect cake.
“Everyone who watched thoroughly enjoyed the day and feedback provided for entrants who were unable to stay was passed onto them when collecting their entries.”
Ms Oke’s top remarks were the sultana cakes were “beautifully presented”, rainbow cakes were “very well done’, rhubarb cakes were “all good, but could use a bit more sugar and cinnamon topping”.
She said the moist coconut cakes were “all nicely prepared, but could do with a little more cooking time”.
Ms Oke imparted her wisdom for future entrants and said to focus on making sure icing is smooth, read the schedule thoroughly and make sure you address what is being asked for in each section.
She judge’s look for pickles and jams that at have clean lids, sealed jars, clean jars, are the correct size and of course the taste and look of the contents.
“We all certainly picked up tips for our next competition,” Ms Holt said.
The first and second place winners will now represent the Milton CWA District branch at the Wollondilly Group Cookery Competition on November 15 in Kangaroo Valley.
The first place winners of the sections from this competition are then eligible to represent the Wollondilly Group at the CWA State Conference in The Land Cookery Competition, being held in May next year.
The cookery competition will be held again next year and they hope to receive more entries across the board, but especially in the children’s categories.
