Wagga City Wanderers enjoyed one of the finest days in the club's history as their time in Capital Football got off to the perfect start. The Wanderers women enjoyed victory in their inaugural game, defeating Tuggeranong United 4-1 at Rawlings Park in the opening round of Canberra's NPL on Sunday. It capped off the perfect weekend for the Wanderers, who were successful in all nine games held in Wagga. The Wanderers won all four junior boys games on Saturday and then backed it up with a clean sweep of the five women's games on Sunday. It was a remarkable achievement on a historic weekend for the club, which is comprised of a strong contingent of players in multiple grades and coach who hail from Cootamundra. Wanderers women's coach Mick Godbier could not be happier with the way his team started the season. "I'm very, very proud," Godbier said. "It's been a long time coming for our girls in the Riverina. We've been training before Christmas and I guess it was our own kind of Christmas (on Sunday), it's what we've been working for over the off-season and I was pretty proud of my girls." Godbier said the 4-1 victory will do wonders for his team's confidence. "There will be a bit of a buzz around training this week," he said. "There is a fair bit of excitement with the girls and the whole club as well.  "To have nine games and not one loss, to score 48 goals and concede eight. "It's magnificent." The Wanderers women got off to a flying start and led 3-0 at half-time. Captain Maddy Harris, teenager Tess Vaccari, Sarsha Smith and Rachel Lyons all scored for the Wanderers, and while it was a brilliant team effort, Lyon, Brandy Nicholson, Harris, Jill Read and Dimity Curran all shone. "We started really well and when you're playing that well, you don't want half-time to come," Godbier said. "We were a bit slow to start the second half but finished the game off really well." Godbier was not sure what to expect from his new team, in a new competition, but knew they would be competitive, regardless of the result. The Wanderers' men start their season at home on Saturday against O'Connor Knights.
