With National Desexing Month underway, the Animal Welfare League Shoalhaven Branch is out to help keep down the number of abandoned pets.
The branch offers a discounted desexing program for anyone experiencing financial difficulties.
Coordinator Aaron Heiler said almost 200 cats and dogs have been desexed through the program in the last 12 months.
“Unwanted cats and dogs seem to be on the decline in the Shoalhaven which is good to see and hopefully we can continue that,” he said.
“Ensuring your pet is desexed is crucial – one of our branches recorded that over the lifetime of one cat, after she had kittens, down the line another 100,000 kittens were produced. That’s just from from that one cat.”
The program works through the Companion Animal Subsidised Scheme and involves a range of local vets.
Subsidised prices are $60 for a male cat, $130 for a female cat, $130 for a male dog and $160 for a female dog.
