On Saturday, October 8, 2016 Tom Carpenter pulled on his wetsuit for his first time teaching an open water dive course at Bawley Point.
Little did he know he was in for a whale of a time.
“Me and my friend Bronwyn were actually teaching our very first open water course,” the Indepth Scuba Canberra instructor said.
“One of them (the students) was like, ‘what’s that over there?’ and we thought it was just going to be a seal but we turned around and saw this massive dorsal fin sticking out of the water.
“It was about as tall as me. Would’ve been six feet.”
The community response was gigantic, amassing nearly 600 shares, 2,000 likes and 1,000 comments on Facebook.
It was dream-like for some.
And others could not believe it.
