Ross Bacon said he wanted the speed changed from 100km/h before someone was “seriously injured or killed”. Some sections of Croobyar Road already have an 80km/h limit.
Mr Bacon, who owns two properties on the road, said other residents living in the area held the same view.
“[The] speed limit is dangerous, outdated and should be reduced. Perhaps it might have been appropriate years ago when the road was the main means of access for the older existing farms and there was limited vehicular traffic,” he said.
“However, over the years, with the creation of concessional lots, the construction of dwellings on most of these lots and the subdivision of some of the larger farms into smaller acreages, we now have a road which supports on any given day a substantial amount of normal road traffic.”
Six months ago Mr Bacon wrote to the RMS about the issue, which said the speed reduction would be reviewed, but did not give a timeframe.
Describing the road as “average”, Mr Bacon said most residents drove slower than the signposted limit.
“Most locals respect the fact it is not appropriate to go 100km/h and slow down, but there has been a lot of building activity and you have trades people speeding and not only that, you have increased traffic on weekends where some tourists tend to speed,” he said.
“I have even seen people test the speed of their cars in the area.
“There are some areas of the road where that have been resealed, but it is not kerbed and guttered, so you have uneven sections.
“One of the major issues with the road is the sun setting in the afternoon; If you are driving on it at about 5pm and have a clear sky, you can hardly see.”
Mr Bacon said he would like the speed limit “changed tomorrow”. He said a survey of speed limits in surrounding suburbs showed no other 100km/h speed limits off the highway.
“There is no other road that has a 100km/h speed limit on it within the vicinity of Burrill Lake, Milton and Ulladulla,” Mr Bacon said.
“The highway even has sections that are 80km/h. No other road in the condition that it is, with amount of traffic on it would be kept at 100km/h.
“It is a timebomb. It is going to result in an accident where someone is seriously injured or killed.”
Mr Bacon said he wanted RMS to give him a timeframe on the when the review process would be completed.
“It is an absolutely ludicrous situation and it has been going on for quite a while,” he said. “I keep getting fobbed off and given no timeframe for a decision.”
