The 13-year-old Ulladulla High School student finished second in the open section of the showmanship competition at the Poultry Pavilion on March 24.
Entrants are required to demonstrate their presentation and showmanship skills and their knowledge of the poultry industry.
Jack went on stage, without any prior practice, and answered questions about the chook’s shape, faults and how to breed a show specimen.
“With a Langshan you have got to have a v-shape. If you have a v-shape that’s good, but if you start getting that drop tail and having a bit of a u-shape, that’s not the best,” Jack said.
Neighbour Carl Murray offered Jack one of his large black Langshans that was showed in the open section. Mr Murray spoke to Jack’s mum, Angela, the night before entries closed and suggested Jack should enter.
“I was reading what you had to do there and thought, gee that’s right up Jack’s alley,” Mr Murray said.
“He knows my birds, no problem there. The rest was Jack.”
Mr Murray also nabbed second place in the langshan Australian, black, cockerel class.
Jack thanked Mr Murray for lending his chicken and his mum for organising the trip and his entry.
The teenager also said he was eyeing off entering the poultry judging competition next year – where the entrant is giving the prizes out and judge rates how the competitor judges the chooks.
