Another wet and wild weekend at Ulladulla Sports Complex saw the club consult with Group 7 to make an early call to cancel our mini’s games at home on that day. Berry soon followed, however that was not before our magnificent four from the U6 Blue, who arrived at Berry for the match before it was cancelled. In great sportsmanship Berry played the match and despite only having four players against the Magpies six, our boys brought home the bacon, well done team.
This week the U18 girls tackle team took on Port Kembla in the Illawarra Inspirations Paint Competition. These girls are experienced players and represent in both league and rugby union, so it was going to be a tough match for our girls.
This week we welcomed local girls Abbey Montgomery and Keele Browne to the side, Abbey represented the Steelers in this season’s Tarsha Gale Cup and Keele is part of the Steelers U16 Lisa Faola development squad. It was lucky that we had these two girls join us, as the team only had 11 players for the match this weekend due to injury, illness and work commitments.
After a morning of pouring rain and bitterly cold wind the weather calmed for the 1pm kick off at Ulladulla and a good crowd was in attendance to cheer on the girls. Play commenced and it was not long before debutante Keele Browne went 40m to score a great opening try, with Alivia Heath converting and the girls had the early 6 – 0 lead. For the next six sets the play moved quickly up and down the field with some big hits from both sides. These girls put their bodies on the line and showed no fear of the larger opponents. Finally after looking dangerous for many plays Meg Buchanan found a gap and made her break to score under the black dot and with Alivia converting the try the Doggies had a 12 – 0.
Port struck back not long after through their zippy half back Amber D’amato making the score 12 – 4. Play continued to traverse the field with the Doggies being lead with charging runs by Meg, Abbey, Georgie, Ella and Shania, who ran hard and never stopped all game despite being generally outsized across the field. Meg and Abbey also made decisive kicks on the end of each set when kicking to try and find their wingers the advantage behind the defensive line. Abbey from around 20m out found a small gap and used her speed and agility to slip through the line to score her first try of the series and the Doggies increased their lead to 16 – 4. What a great effort for both Keele and Abbey to score in the first match for the Doggies.
The Doggies were again on the charge against Ports tough and hard hitting defence, Georgie took the ball up the middle and was crushed by a much larger Port opponent, however she got up and in a wrap around move she obtained the ball back and was slammed hard in the next tackle which resulted in Georgie having to leave the field for assessment. This left the girls with only 10 players on the field and two minutes until half time, but they rounded out the half with full control over Port.
The second half saw the Doggies resume play with only 10 players as the decision was made to rest Georgie after the heavy hits. This did not deter the Doggies, who continued to push up in Ports faces and their defence was tightly knitted. Ally England was fantastic tackling anything that was in her sight and running down many a player across the field. We look forward to the coming weeks watching Ally and her sister Hannah when Hannah returns to playing after a shoulder injury suffered in the Illawarra Steelers final match of the season. These two girls show no fear and hit as hard as the boys in defence. Allys persistence in attack and defence paid off when she ran away to score out wide extending our lead to 20 – 4.
Midway through the second half Alivia Heath was showing that her defence was as good as her attack and in the course of a tackle took a knock, which resulted in Alivia needing to leave the field to have time to recover. This reduced the Doggies to the minimum 9 on the field, however this only encouraged the Doggies to hold on more. And despite some harsh play by the Port girls, they kept them in check until the final minutes of the game when forward Tayla Walton found the line and Amber D’amato converted. However, time and the Doggies had beaten Port with the Doggies winning comfortably in the end 20 – 10.
Christina Fascianelli, who had never played tackle before last week is continuing to improve as the games progress and we look forward to her development over the coming weeks. Brittany Peters, who has overcome a niggling back injury from last years league tag season, is showing that tackle is her game. Brit tackles anyone that comes at her and is not afraid to run the ball into the defensive line and also has a great kicking game.
Chelsea Rowley has joined the Doggies from Batemans Bay. This is Chelsea’s second season in the U18s girls tackle competition and her experience is greatly appreciated. Despite being new to the team, she has bonded well with the girls and is a valuable member of the team.
Next week the girls travel to Berkeley for a 1pm game on Saturday. Keep going girls, we are all behind you. Tries: Kelle Browne, Meg Buchanan, Abbey Montgomery, Ally England. Goals: Alivia Heath 2/4.
In other news at Milton Ulladulla RLFC:
We would like to thank all of the parents who ensured that their children got to their games on time and safely - no doubt every player enjoyed a bit of wet weather footy over the weekend, so a bigger thanks to the parents washing the jerseys this week!
Parents, we would like to remind you that game cancellations due to wet weather are made by Group 7 and the merged competition after consultation with the local councils involved. So unless it is raining heavily on the Friday, we will not be informed of any game cancellations until 7am on Saturday morning. We will then endeavour to advise all families via Facebook and websites, so if you have not read about any cancellations, not heard anything broadcast by Power FM or 2ST, please take it as all games are on.
We once again need to acknowledge our match officials, who again spent hours out in the rain officiating the matches. So a huge thank you to Haydn Galea, Ben Russell, Kevin Whitford and Tarje Whitford who endured the conditions without a complaint.
This week we farewell the U16 GLT Red coach Tim Hanchard. Tim has gained a new job which will no longer see him able to coach the girls on a week to week basis. Thank you to Tim, who has been there for this team over the past couple of years and a huge thank you to Nathan Carriage, who has stepped up to replace Tim. Nathan and his daughter, former Junior Doggie Jadyn, have volunteered to take the team for the rest of the season.
We would like to remind all coaches and managers that the committee are holding a coaches meeting this Thursday at the Ex Servos at 6.30pm. Please ensure that you are in attendance.
During the week Jye Hendrie travelled to Canberra to play a selection match for the NSW Southern School boys team which play next week in Myuna Bay, good luck Jye and enjoy the experience.
The full drawer should hopefully be available later this week, once it is available we will publish copies on our sites, please note that the draw only provides the matches and the venue for each week. Match times are still advised on a week to week basis and the entire draw is subject to change.
The committee would like to remind all teams playing at home each weekend that the club requires your assistance to make the day run smoothly. If your team is participating in the first game, we ask that the parents and supporters assist in setting up the fields, and the teams that are involved in the last games of the day, that parents and supporters assist in packing up the fields and returning all items neatly to the sheds. Each team is required to provide two parents to assist in the canteen and on the barbecue in the hour before their game. The canteen is one of the clubs biggest revenue raisers, without parent helpers it will not be able to operate. We will average 12 home games each week, which is a huge day at Ulladulla and we need to ensure all Doggies families chip in and help to lessen the burden on our regular volunteers.
The NRLs new Code of Conduct for 2018 has been published and copies of this can be found on our Facebook page and website, this applies to not only players but also spectators so please take the time to read it. Now that the winter chill has hit, why not show your support of our Junior Doggies in club merchandise. It is available from the canteen on training and match days, we have hoodies from size 4 to 3XL (larger sizes available by request), polos from size 6 to 4XL, training shorts, hats, gear bags, spare previous season shorts and socks.
Our weekly meat raffles at the Ex Servos continue to surge along and each week we ask a team and their families to come along and support and assist us with the raffles. This week it is the U14 boys teams turn – looking forward to seeing lots of new families present. Ticket sales commence at 6pm, with the draw for the 40+ meat trays commencing at 7pm. By supporting our raffles you in turn are supporting our major sponsors of Ulladulla Ex Servos and Sea Salt Restaurant, the club has lots to offer on Friday night apart from our raffles, there is the kids club, great value meals in the Sea Salt Restaurant and Friday night footy live on the big screen.
We would like to remind all parents and supporters that our fields are smoke-free venues, there is no smoking permitted at anytime within the gated area. We would also like to remind everyone that there is no parking within the fields at anytime, unless you have gained permission from the committee. There are currently too many parents and spectators driving into the fields especially on training nights, we ask this for the safety of all users of the fields.
The club would like to thank our major sponsors Milton Ulladulla Ex Servos and Stewarts Catering for all their support. The club looks forward to proudly representing all of our sponsors this season and thank you all for your support of junior rugby league in the Milton Ulladulla area. Keep up to date on all things Junior Doggies via Facebook and our website.
