Described as an occasional performing choir, Southland is comprised of a group of friends under the direction of the accomplished and talented musician Lesley Challender. Ms Challender plays and teaches oboe and piano as well as directing the Shoalhaven Lydian Singers. She has previously directed the Macarthur Singers, a cappella groups Cambiata and Cantare, and various church choirs.
The Southland journey began in 2012, with the aim of combining the joy of singing with the pleasures of overseas travel. After some hard work, this aim was realized in performances at the Christmas and Advent festivals in Budapest, Bratislava and Prague.
After the rewarding experience members decided to make this an ongoing pleasure and in 2015, Southland participated in festivals in Italy, Poland and Spain, and in 2017 toured in Vietnam.
In Australia, Southland has performed at the Blackheath Choral Festival and has given concerts in Pyrmont, Camden, Bathurst and Berry as well as featuring in the International Choral Program at the 2017 Festival of Voices in Hobart. When asked to describe the appeal of Southland, musical director Ms Challender said “we find audiences really enjoy our Australian repertoire and our friendly Aussie style.”
The concert is at St Martins Church, Ulladulla at 2pm on Sunday, May 20. Admission can be purchased at the door. Tickets range between $20 and $25 and school-aged children enter for free with an adult.
