Jennifer gave members an overview of her recent trip to the Galapagos Islands with Silver Seas Explorer who specialise in small ships adventure expeditions. She travelled to South America and from there flew out the the islands.
Jennifer was impressed by the many different species seen - penguins, sea lions, iguanas, whales, blue-footed boobies – and how she could get close without frightening them. Tourist contact with the wild life in the Galapagos area is kept to a minimum with some islands being off limits and all other areas only visited by one ship at a time.
She was able to visit the Post Office Island and brought a letter found there back to someone on the NSW South Coast.
The guest speaker was Keith Purvis from Ulladulla Podiatry. Keith commenced his presentation by inviting members to visit his website and his practice. He is a qualified podiatrist, having completed a four-year university degree, and has practised in Ulladulla for 21 years.
Podiatry is a registered profession with the government and podiatrists are required to complete 20 hours per annum continuing education.
As people age they are more likely to require podiatry to maintain comfortable feet. Podiatrists address patients’ symptoms from the knee down, including the foot and ankle.
Keith outlined the common problems he treats. They include nail issues, skin complaints, heel pain, and corns and calluses.
Diabetics often have poor blood supply in their lower limbs which result in “unwell feet”.
Keith assists patients in fitting the correct style of shoe, including insoles, and he displayed several examples which are available from his practice.
He recommended that all children should have their feet checked before getting their first pair of school shoes. He said that shoes must be comfortable and robust.
In answer to questions from members he said that there was a good local referral network whereby he could communicate with other health professionals about patients’ feet issues which may be linked to major problems.
A referral is not needed to visit a podiatrist. Some patients may be entitled to an enhanced care program which provides five consultations per annum funded by Medicare.
Keith’s presentation was assisted by his wife Nicole. Roger Halls thanked Keith Purvis for his talk and presented him with a thank you gift from the club.
