When the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie was being filmed, Mollymook’s Peta Rixon, who starred as Alpha 5, didn’t foresee it still being popular a quarter of a century later.

Ms Rixon got the role after a long audition process and now spends time meeting fans at events, such as Supanova, which was held in Sydney on June 16 and 17, and will be held in Perth on June 23 and 24.
More than 200,000 people attend the cosplay event and Ms Rixon said she enjoyed spending time meeting fans. Ms Rixon only started attending conventions in 2015, and at first was surprised by her popularity several years after starring in Power Rangers.
“I was surprised at first, but I ended up going on the fandoms [pages]. The Power Rangers was the number 1 show in the world in the 90s, and the kids back then are now adults with kids, and are introducing their kids to the franchise,” she said.
“The fan base is very strong and you don’t realise the amount of people who still follow the rangers and know everything about it. They stay up-to-date on the comics, games and toys.
“Now, because I am very interactive with the fans online, and on social media, it is not too surprising.
“Supanova is so much fun, people get dressed up and take their kids and they get to meet their superheros or Disney princesses.”
Playing Alpha 5 was a privileged for Ms Rixon who had worked in television and film before securing the role. After five auditions, a costume trial won her the gig.
“It got down to three people and we all had to try the robotic part of the costume on,” Ms Rixon explained.
“One guy was too short, another girl was too tall, and I was just the right height.
“The audition process was rigorous; It was a lot of script reading and I can still visualize myself on set. I wouldn’t have thought it would be this big and still going 25 yeas later.
“Because Australia hadn’t been affected by power rangers at the time, I had no idea what it was before I got the role.”
However, playing Alpha 5 is not all Ms Rixon has achieved in her career. She had 4 finalist nominations in 5 categories for the AIPP (Association Internationale Presse Professionnelle Coiffure) awards in Paris in 2011.
Ms Rixon also spent time as a drama teacher, and designed the set for Kasey Chamber’s music video for the song ‘Luka’.
“I built Kasey Chamber’s set, which included the flower wall,” Ms Rixon said.
“That song was her launch into the US market with Sony.
“I’ve also produced productions at the London Royal Theatre. It is exciting because, as an artist, you don’t have to say ‘I am just an actor’.
“I can write a production book now and I understand lighting and sound peoples’ language.”
Now calling Mollymook home, Ms Rixon shares her skills with students at Livewire Theatre, UIladulla. Having moved to the area in 2006, she has no plans to leave.
”I love Mollymook, Ulladulla and Milton because I can walk slowly, I don’t have to rush like in Sydney. Everyone is friendly, it is a safer community and a beautiful community as well,” Ms Rixon said.
“I love that I can walking to Mollymook Beach and the beach isn’t going to packed out like Sydney beaches.”
