Jim Mison said he was “damn near in tears” after he heard of the lies being spread online.
“No-way were we going to charge anyone,” Mr Mison said.
“It is not true.”
Shoalhaven City Council mayor Amanda Findley said she was alerted of the rumour by a link to a person’s post spreading the rumour.
Cr Findley then turned to social media on Friday to bury the rumour.
“I would like to clear up right now any rumours about Milton Show Committee charging camping fees - it is not true,” she said.
“I have spoken directly with the president (Mr Mison) and have his assurances that this never happened to evacuees who turned up there.
“Please remove all posts in this nature and lets keep it positive people on a day of terrible tragedy.”
Mr Mison said council contacted him and he confirmed that the committee had not charged anybody who had been evacuated.
The showground’s committee also extended thanks to businesses and private individuals who donated food earlier in the week.
Cattle and horses remain at the showground, Mr Mison said.
