Around 6pm crews conducted a back burn to work towards containing the fire, according to RFS spokesperson Greg Allan.
“Crews are getting the upper hand and are continuing work to contain the fire,” he said.
There is no immediate threat to property.
Mr Allan said smoke may be visible in the area for some time.
EARLIER: Rural Fire Service crews are working to extinguish a fire near Woodstock Road at Milton.
RFS spokesperson Greg Allan said the fire was located in a gully off Woodstock Road.
“Crews are extinguishing a small fire in a gully,” he said.
“It’s within the lines of [last month’s] Kingiman fire.”
Mr Allan said 20 firefighters were on scene trying to extinguish the blaze, which has not yet been contained.
Initial reports of the fire came through to crews about 2.40pm.
The fire is not a threat to any property.
A Total Fire Ban has been declared for the Illawarra-Shoalhaven for Saturday, September 15.
The fire risk rating for Saturday is severe, due to the hot and windy conditions.
