More than 70 sculptures constructed by South Coast artists have been showcased against a backdrop of the Budawangs and Pigeon House Mountain.

The biennial Sculpture at Petana exhibition, held at the property of Peter Roy and Anna Rosen in Morton, was launched at an award ceremony and private viewing on Wednesday, October 3.
The exhibition forms part of the Escape ARTfest festival.

Long Beach resident Paul Dimmer collected first prize in the large sculpture section with his recycled stainless steel depiction of two large kangaroos fighting.
Mr Dimmer said he was “very pleased” to claim the $1,000 prize. He drew inspiration from the mobs of kangaroos he sees on a reserve close to his property.
“Quite often the bucks are sparring,” he said.
Mr Dimmer used recycled stainless steel to create the uniquely Australian artwork. He “drew” the sparring buddies with 6mm stainless steel rods, before cutting plates and welding on.
“Thanks to Peter and Anna for holding it and providing their garden. There is nothing better than a nice garden to display sculptures in.”
Nowra sculptor Dora A. Rognvaldsdottir was awarded the best small sculpture for her bronze work titled Aspiration.
“It’s all about optimism, standing tall, walking tall and embracing the moment,” she said.
Local artist Peter Percy was runner-up in the small category while Nadya Burke was second in the large sculpture division.
More than 28 artists, including the local Nulladolla Pottery and the Milton Ulladulla U3A mosiac groups, submitted pieces to the exhibition.
Mr Roy said the biennial event fostered South Coast talent.
“We focus on encouraging local artists. It’s a grassroots event.”
Mr Roy, who suffered an ankle injury while fire-proofing his house during Mount Kingiman fires, praised the 20 volunteers who helped put the finishing touches on the display.
He was also rapt to offer his family’s garden for the third ever exhibition.
“A lot of the artists know the garden, the structure lends itself, it’s like a series of rooms where artists can exhibit work with less competition,” he said.
Sculptures at Petana will be open to the public from Saturday, October 6 to Sunday, October 14 with gates open from 10am to 4pm daily.
Admission to the event, including the exhibition catalogue, is $10 for adults and free for kids. Petana Gardens is at 408b Woodburn Road, Morton. Mr Roy encouraged viewers to bring a picnic basket and enjoy the atmosphere.
Escape ARTfest will be launched with the Milton Gallery Walk on Thursday, October 4.
