On Saturday, November 17, 29 disabled surfers took to the waves at Mollymook Beach for the eighth edition of the annual event.
The group was under the watchful eye of more than 70 volunteers, which included students from Milton Public School and Ulladulla High School and members of Ulladulla Boardriders Club.
Disabled Surfers Association South Coast president Ian Picton said the “atrocious” weather forecast for Saturday missed the beach and surfers had “great” conditions.
“Waves were about one to one and a half foot, no wind at all,” he said.
A couple of first-time entrants joined the group, Mr Picton said, including one four-year-old boy from Helensburgh, who claimed the novice surfer prize.
Mr Picton praised local surf shop businesses for their support and Bunnings for supplying food and serving a barbecue lunch.
“These local surf shops have been major supporters of disabled surfing in the region.”
Each participant left with a goodies bag, filled with goods donated by the three businesses.
The annual event returns to Mollymook on the first or second Saturday each November. The next South Coast event is at Thirroul on December 1.
