The annual Cancer Council fundraiser for the region was held on the lawns of the Ulladulla Civic Centre on Saturday, November 17.
Relay for Life drew 23 teams, 22 which had pre-registered, and more than 120 walkers to the lawns for the 12-hour fundraiser where teams and individuals united to do lap after lap together to fight cancer.
The group had raised more than $20,000 and will keep pushing to reach their goal of $40,000, Cancer Council community relations coordinator Stephanie Lake said.
Teams will be fundraising over the next few weeks, before the top fundraiser is announced, she said. At the time of printing, Team One Agency was in the lead.
All funds will be directed to the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services.
Highlights of the event included the positive reception of the new venue and the Hope Ceremony.
The Hope Ceremony featured a moving slideshow of walkers’ friends and family members lost to cancer, to a touching rendition of an Angus and Julia Stone song, played by local artists Little Forest, Ms Lake said.
“It was an incredible community event where everyone rallied together to celebrate cancer survivors and carers, to remember those we’ve lost and to raise funds in the fight against cancer,” Ms Lake said.
About midday, a child, Darcy, and two Ulladulla High School students, Antonia Bewley and Jack Bridle, had their heads shaved as part of their fundraising efforts.
Ms Lake said each person’s effort to shave their heads to raise funds and raise awareness for the fight against cancer was inspiring.
Another highlight of the event was the Gym Challenge, Ms Lake said. The fitness challenges included squats and push up contests, sprints and the classic strength test Tug-O-War. Crossfit Huey claimed first place ahead of Team Tribe and Ulladulla Leisure Centre.
Previously Relay For Life was held over 24 hours at the Milton Showground. The central Ulladulla location allowed visitors to check-in throughout the day and interact with the 100-plus walkers.
“We’ve had lots of positive feedback on the venue, everyone loved the 12 hours,” Ms Lake said.
“The venue was the perfect size, it was cosy and it brought members of the community together.”
