This captivating two-storey timber cottage set in a bushland oasis, is quintessential South Durras. Built for the owner in 1986 by well-known local builder Bob Mates, it has provided an idyllic home and holiday destination for visiting family over the years.
Four types of timber have been used in the construction: Western red cedar on the external walls, pine wall cladding on the internal walls, pine flooring, exposed Oregon beams, and Tasmanian myrtle for the bench kitchen benchtops, which were refurbished in 2002.
Downstairs the layout consists of a spacious timber floored open-plan living area, with adjoining library or study. Features of the living room are the French doors opening onto the verandah and a wood combustion heater. The galley kitchen separated from the dining area by an island bench, has two Miele ovens and an integrated Miele dishwasher. Completing the level is a laundry, shower and toilet accessed from the back door, along with an outdoor shower.

The upper level, accessed by a return staircase, has raked cathedral ceilings and houses three generous bedrooms and a bathroom with bath. Just off the verandah is a paved barbecue area - perfect for entertaining on balmy nights. A free-standing studio located to the rear of the block is surrounded by the beauty of the natural garden, with its own tank for water.
A 25,000 litre tank supplies water to the house and a 12,000 litre tank supplies the garden. The hot water system uses a cost-effective inverter system, and the septic has an absorption trench.
