The family faced a blow when Prime Minister Scott Morrison installed Warren Mundine as candidate.
Mrs Schultz was upset when her son was disendorsed.
I would have been expelled. I wasn't about to let that happen, but I did it with tears.

"It was quite upsetting because I've been in the Liberal Party since I first voted, and I had to resign to support my son," she said.
"Otherwise I would have been expelled.
"So I wasn't about to let that happen, but I did it with tears.
"The Prime Minister gave him quite a kick."
Mrs Schultz was not surprised when her son decided to run as an Independent in the 2019 federal election.
When asked what it was like being a mother of a politician, Mrs Schultz said it was "much easier" than being a wife of a politician.
She was married to the late Alby Schultz, a Liberal MP for the federal seat of Hume.
"I don't worry so much about my hair, or if my make-up's not on," she said.
Mrs Schultz has been working for a political party since she was 18.
"My late-husband Alby was very interested (in politics), of course, from an early age. So it was something that was discussed around the dinner table most nights," she said.
She said Grant was a wonderful son.
"(He's) very caring, very compassionate and I just love watching him with his family," she said.
"He's always happy and very accepting of life, in general. He will accept the voters' choice.
"He has a lovely wife and two gorgeous daughters. What else does a man want?"
She had only good things to say about her volunteering experience at the booths.
On Saturday, May 18, she was handing out how-to-vote pamphlets at Moruya High School.
"I've been here every day on pre-poll and today, I actually drove from Bermagui to Nowra, up and back, for a week," she said.
"The company of the pre-poll and today at the polling booth has been outstanding, it's lovely.
"There is no ill feeling between the parties, we all accept what we're here for, with a little job to do, and we do it well."
