Call for volunteers
Legacy arose from a promise a digger made to a dying comrade in trenches of World War I that his family would be looked after. This promise continues to underpin the work of the organisation that grew from that promise today. Legacy Australia is a group of like-minded volunteers, known as Legatees, who carry on this promise to care for the widows and children of Veterans who are killed in action or subsequently die from wounds or injuries received in operations. Legacy volunteers are welcomed from all walks of life but many are retired Defence veterans.

Nationally Legacy cares for some 65,000 widows and 600 children with about 1500 of this group being people with disabilities. Assistance can include educational assistance for children, limited financial assistance to widows and families and social activities for widows. It also includes an advocacy and support system to assist new widows through the bureaucratic processes associated with gaining the War Widows pension and funeral expenses.
In our local community Legacy is represented by the Mid South Coast Legacy Group which is a subset of Wollongong and South Coast Legacy. Our Mid South Coast Legacy takes in the area from Sussex Inlet in the north to Bawley Point in the south and currently cares for about 150 widows through the efforts of 15 volunteers. Our Legatees continue to give great service to Legacy even though some are in their twilight years. Indeed, our oldest volunteer, at 90 years of age, is not just our best Legatee but a War Widow herself. Many other Legatees are in their late 70s and 80s and a finding it increasingly difficult to give the effort that they once could. We are desperately in need of more members of the local veteran community, or the community more generally, to join us in providing ongoing services to our widows.
Every ANZAC Day we witness veterans of all ages proudly displaying their medals as they march and commemorate the memories of fallen comrades in our local area. We at Legacy are hopeful that after reading this letter some of the younger members of the community will join us in supporting this great cause. As Legacy is an organisation solely focused on the families of veterans, we would especially like to see younger veterans become involved to ensure that this service can carry on well into the future here on the Mid South Coast.
Being a Legacy volunteer will not encroach on your life with just a small amount of time required each month. The personal rewards of volunteering can be immense. If you think that you can help Mid South Coast Legacy Group carry on delivering support to the families of Veterans who have paid the ultimate sacrifice either in battle or from injuries received serving this great country please be that "someone else", put your hand up and contact Legatee Peter Davis on 4455 7620 for more information on how you can help.

Fear and lies
As a Labor supporter I was shattered by the federal election result. The Liberals under Morrison conducted a fear campaign based on lies. Morrison lied about Labor initiating death duties, he lied about Labor having a retiree tax and he lied about Labor contributing to a weak economy. He also lied in claiming that the Liberals had a coherent and effective climate change policy. These are facts. Notwithstanding these lies he has been re-elected. Readers can form their own view about this person we are now expected to call our leader. Shame.
On the upside, I'm very pleased our seat of Gilmore has been won by Labor and that the ineffective and unresponsive Ann Sudmalis has been removed. It indicates that our community as a whole has progressive and humanitarian members who saw past the Liberal misinformation and made their wishes clear. Now I look forward to three more years of agitating for the removal of the Morrison government.
