South Coast and Lake Illawarra police districts have organised a special family fun day in honour of the man affectionately, and widely known, simply as Jonno.

Chief Inspector Johnson tragically took his own life last year, and he will be the focus as officers from both areas do battle on the football field for the coveted Steven "Jonno" Johnson Memorial Shield.

This will be the fourth time the two stations, of which Jonno worked at both, have met on the field.

It will be the second time the South Coast Dolphins and the Lake Illawarra Lions have battled it out for the Jonno Memorial Shield.

Last year's game, held just weeks after his untimely death, ended in a 3-all draw.

This Sunday's clash is expected to be just as keenly contested.

Nowra Detective Jason Angus said the shield "will not be leaving Nowra".

"We've had the shield since last year and there's no way we'll be giving it up," he said.

"It's always a bit of a grudge match between us and Lake Illawarra - even if we lose, it's [the shield] staying in Nowra!"

Officer in charge of the Nowra Station, Inspector Ray Stynes said Jonno was "one of a kind".

"Jonno was a terrific guy and someone we all miss deeply," he said.

"Jonno was Jonno, he was bigger than life, and involved in so many things within our community.

"Everyone loved him at the police station and loved him in the community.

"That was shown by the respect at his unfortunate funeral. Probably the biggest funeral Nowra has seen ever - in my time at least."

Jonno was involved in many community events - PCYC programs, with the indigenous community, in particular the youth and regularly ran local fishing events.

"Jonno was greatly loved in the police not just here at Nowra but also when he did his time at Lake Illawarra," Insp Stynes said.

"And that's where the link is between the Lake Illawarra cops and the South Coast police.

"He was just on the go all the time. That's just the way he was."

Lake Illawarra Superintendent Dean Smith said Jonno was a great servant of both the Lake Illawarra and South Coast regions.

"Jonno was well known and respected in both the Lake Illawarra and the South Coast regions," he said.

"He played an important role within both wider communities, including the indigenous communities.

"There was a link with both areas.

"It's important we celebrate Jonno and support his family and at the same time support Beyond Blue."

Sunday's event will be much more than just a clash on the football field.

Organisers have arranged a great family fun day which will support Beyond Blue.

"There will be a lot of skillful players on show," Det Angus said.

"A lot of older blokes who think they can still play but probably can't.

"We have got a lot of players down here in the Nowra team and this is the first time every single person in our squad is playing. That just shows the respect to Jonno, that they all want to play in the game."

Inspector Stynes said the day is open to everyone.

"We'd love to see a big crowd," Insp Stynes said.

"It's not just a police event, its open to everyone. The more the merrier. Come along and have a bit of a laugh and a fun day with the cops.

"We have a lot of things planned."

Activities are kicking off at 11am.

There will be face painting, a jumping castle and bumper soccer, will be just some of the activities offered.

At 12 noon there will be a touch match again between Nowra and Lake Illawarra police - two teams of titans fighting for victory in an action-packed game of wits and strategy.

That will be followed at 1pm with the big football clash.

Just a gold coin donation will get you in and the proceeds will go to Beyond Blue.
