In celebration of the Bombers Indigenous round, both teams and coaching staff were brought into the centre of the ground - that had been artfully painted with the Aboriginal flag - for the coin toss. The didgeridoo sounded in lieu of the siren, and we took the field with a new-look midfield involving demolition gal Jodie in the ruck, and the skilful bulldozing of Shaylee, supported by the ever-reliable Lucy and Mel.
It didn't take long for the M&M dream team of Mia and Mel to work the ball into our attacking 50 and for Mel to score the first goal of the game in the second minute. But the Bombers were quick to get one back. A few hard-fought minutes saw Regan boot one from 40 out, which Shan Lloyd expertly left to bounce through the middle.
The second quarter saw much of the same, with Bethany driving the footy out of danger more often than Tiger Woods swings his club. Add half-back Rachael into the mix supported by Kelly, Toni, Paris, and Lily, and the Dockettes stopped the Bombers from scoring any majors.
The dream team kept the ball moving through the middle, supported by Leigh using her body to create space and our forward line did what they do best with another two majors added to the board. Shan Bradley took a spectacular mark on the run and then found Mel in an empty paddock smack bang in front of goals who slotted her second for the day. Dockettes up 4.4.28 to 1.1.7 at half time.
Coming into the third term, the Dockettes were feeling good. Coach Kimbo switched winger Evie and back pocket Paris which saw Paris getting in and winning the footy. A high tackle rightfully saw one of the Dockettes' four free kicks go to Paris who drove the ball forward and found Regan in space. The ball found current league lead goal kicker Shan Lloyd who added her first and only for the day.
The Bombers fought back and got the ball into our defensive 50, but the characteristic Dockettes fight from Evie, Shaylee, and Bethany got the ball to Lucy out the back of the pack who found Mel. Mel thought it was a good time to practise her cross-country and ran the field with four or five bounces in the mix. A quick turnover saw the ball bounce back into our defensive 50, and centre half forward Em could see the backline needed extra support and sprinted the field to save a goal in the final few minutes of the term.
The last quarter was tough. Our legs were tired and the Bombers were making the most of their eight-woman bench. A quick goal to the Bombers saw Shaylee drop back to half-back for extra support. Nic was throwing her characteristic strength around in a way that would make Miley Cyrus proud. Her ability to use her body to wreak havoc resulted in a shoulder injury that will see her return just in time for finals.
Just as the coaching staff were about to drop Shan "Killer" Bradley back, Shazzles cleared the ball and Killer got crafty, stepping around two Bombers and attempting a bounce - shame it bounced off her shin! She regained control of the ball under pressure and fired off the perfect drop punt which sailed straight through the middle.
The final score saw the Dockettes 6.4.40 defeating Bombers 2.5.17. Player's player went 3. Bethany Crouch, 2. Em Hutchins and 1. Regan Taylor. We take on Nowra/Albatross ViQueens next week at 12.30pm.
