Wow, what a great game of minor pairs was played last week between Brian Openshaw/Stan Croker and Peter Sneddon/Jock Robertson. Brian and Stan came out of the blocks early and built up quite a substantial lead and looked like walking away with the game, but bowls is a great leveller, and Snedds & Jock came back with a vengeance. In the last eight ends Brian & Stan only scored one point while Pete & Jock piled on the points and managed to get back to even stevens, then the pressure was really on. The last two ends went neck and neck but Brian managed to hang onto the very slender lead and one could almost say he and Stan fell over the line to take the win. This week sees the Garney Noble invitation pairs on Wednesday & Thursday and good luck to all those participating, it will be a very competitive two days. The rest of this week was only fit for eskimos with a freezing cold sou'wester blowing across the greens with the results of the games in the lap of the gods. Most of us who played had very little idea of where the bowl would end up after we had delivered it. At least the jacks didn't stray much from the centre lines. What a crazy week.
Mollymook Roadrunners
The wind and the cold kept many Roadrunners at home last Sunday with only sixteen coming out to play. Two games of triples and one pairs game were played with the following results: Harry Williams, Bruce Whitby and Bob Brooks 21 accounted for Les Dunn, Eric King and Paul Barnes 19. Mike Lynn and Peter Champion 19 narrowly defeated Sue Dent/Dot Pannowitz and David White 18 with Craig Lees as a swinging lead. Robin Oke and Alan Montefiore 22 prevailed over Ralph Gabbott and Gordon Lang 11.
The winning rink and the fresh chickens was shared by Robin Oke and Alan Montefiore while the lucky losers, getting half their game fees back were Les Dunn, Eric King and Paul Barnes. Raffle winners included Gordon Lang, Bruce Whitby, Sue Dent, Peter Champion, Dot Pannowitz, Les Dunn, Rebecca Moon, Ralph Gabbott and Harry Williams. Next Sunday we will be back to normal bowls with the cards being called for an 9.00 start.
Mollymook Men
Blizzard conditions for most of last week, happily without snow, were not welcomed by many bowlers. In fact last Friday's Open Pairs was sensibly cancelled by Mollymook's bowls co-ordinator Ron Wall. Saturday's conditions had eased somewhat for round 1 of the Major Fours championship (two contests only) to be played. It was great to see a relatively new & inexperienced team "havvago". Mike Hayes (S), Graham Corby, Les Dunn & Peter Crowe not only found themselves on a very fast green in near blizzard winds but up against the highly rated team of Ron Wall (S), Ray Flinn, Dave Harrison & Andrew Jarvis. One could almost hear the teeth chattering & that from the warmth of the clubhouse! The Hayes team scored the first point of the game but then Wallie's warriors held them on that for the next eight ends & the white flag was raised after the 18th. The other match, that between two very likely teams of Gary McGuire (S), Kerry Jones, Paul Barnes & Ted Fraser versus Sid Brand, Terry Hill, Tony Hutchins & Mark Sommerville went the full distance& was a close contest throughout: 6/6 all after 9 ends with the McGuire team leading 14/12 with two ends to play. All close to hyperthermia they held on to win 16/13. The quarter final of the Veterans Singles was played Tuesday 6th before the winds arrived. Ted Fraser def. Eric Woodburn 2/0 in a tie-break; likewise Al Wynter def. Kerry Jones 2/0; John Wilton def. Ivan Traves in two sets as did Gary McGuire against Graham Boots. The interupted final of the Major-Minor pairs was not finalised of course, play resumption T.B.A
SOCIAL: Wednesday Triples : Nick King & John Sheriff won the lucky ring $20 vouchers in a pairs game, with a 23/11 win vs Ted Fraser & Mike Lynn. Lucky losers were Hutch, Bionic Bob & Kojak.
