Sally Simpson is showcasing her Breathing The Bones exhibition at The Wall Art Projects.
Recently, Ms Simpson won the Adelaide Perry Drawing Award and her new exhibition will include more drawings from this series, as well as her remarkable sculptures made from the bones of animals.
Ms Simpson now lives on an acreage near Canberra and often sees death and decay, particularly on the roads. Her "roadside memorial" sculptures don't distinguish between native and introduced species and treat all bones with care and respect as they are waxed and bound.
"Bones always seem like beautiful sculptures to me, I find their form and surfaces attractive and tactile. While living on a small farm near Berry I collected many from surrounding paddocks. I had a permit to collect them for use in sculpture. The first one I made was 'Watering Can' which won the Meroogal art prize in 2006."
Sally then went on to create a large cross from cattle bones which became part of her Masters graduate exhibition.
She saw this work as a grave marker, honouring the life processes of all animals.
