Ulladulla Boardriders' Harry Phillips is one of three Australians selected to compete in the under 18s boys event at Huntington Beach, California, from October 26 to November 3.

Phillips said he was "pretty stoked" to be going to the World Championships.

"It qualified through regionals and states, and then I had the Australian titles," he said.

"You had to finish in the top three to go to worlds.

"I went to the Gold Coast a couple of weeks ago to camp with the team, and I know them all from competitions as well.

"I'll travel over with the team, but I think my dad his partner will come across as well."

Harry finished third at the Australian championships to qualify, a process that his father, Darren, described as "nerve wracking".

"We were stoked when he was down there competing in the Australian titles, and worlds became a bit of a reality as he progressed through the heats," Phillips said.

"It wasn't until the final that we thought about what was on the line, so we were just hoping he didn't finish fourth, because that seemed a bit cruel."

Phillips said he was looking forward to supporting his son in the United States.

"Surfing Australia sent out a video of what to expect from last year, and we're pretty much going to be in Huntington Beach the majority of the time," he said.

"He'll obviously stay there to support the team, but we may pinch a day here and there. Hopefully we don't get that opportunity though, hopefully we get to see him in another final."

The VISSLA ISA Junior World Championships are the premier championships for surfers under the age of 18.

Former winners include Culburra Beach siblings Owen Wright, Tyler Wright and Gerroa's Sally Fitzgibbons.
