Should the army fix our bridges?
Thank you for the article regarding Wheelbarrow Bridge. May I add that those of us in the Morton area, (Clyde Ridge, Carisbrook, Brooman Roads), have a further two bridges out of action.

This is a significant inconvenience - especially to those of us trying to run businesses - and more than that, a serious hazard.
During the bushfires in early December we had to make two calls for assistance, the second one made after the three bridges had become unusable; the only reason that the RFS had been able to find their way to us was because the driver was a local with sufficient local knowledge to find an alternate route.
We have made several requests to have these bridges fixed but to no avail.
Council employees may have lost the requisite skills to do this work but the army have not; we hear so much about the great work being done by the army, yet only catch sight of them as their vehicles drive through Milton and Ulladulla on their way to villages further South. Why is that?

Land at Burrill Lake not zoned for private boat club
Re: Barker Park at Burrill Lake with its so-called boat shed proposal - size being bigger than the average four bed/two bathroom house and double its height.
The land was gifted to the Burrill Lake and visiting members of the public park for their own enjoyment with the ambiance of the lake and adjoining trees and birdlife, fishing swimming etc under the management of Shoalhaven Council.
The land is zoned RE1 (public recreation) not for a private boat club with its own building and obviously future extensions causing increased car activity, noise pollution and much more land use for their water craft on the pursuit of club expansion.
I believe, by their own admission in their actual DA submission, their answers to the application questionnaire are very questionable indeed and in many cases incorrect. It should not have been accepted anyway.
I am completely (at a loss) as to how council can even allow this submission in the first place with the land zoning being RE1.

Climate skeptics gingerly starting to admit they were wrong
It seems that even long term climate science skeptics such as Andrew Bolt are now beginning- however gingerly- to admit that they have been wrong about the science for decades.
Large fuel corporates such as BHP have done likewise. Even James Murdoch has changed his views. The Australian public has made up its mind on this issue and the political classes are now scrambling to do likewise.
Except, however our worthy SCC Councillors, especially the "tight eight" who have been scrumming together to run Council policy for many years now.
This voting block has demonstrated a lack of leadership and a disregard for both scientific evidence and the long term public good dating back over many years.
They still profess to believe that somehow the Shoalhaven coastline will be exempt from the sea level increase affecting the rest of the east coast, and are now disputing the validity of the weekly tests of the Lake Conjola water.
These scientific tests show the water to be of good quality and quite safe. They, typically without offering any evidence to the contrary, decide otherwise.
One wonders whose interests they are representing. Certainly not the majority of the public, as polls have repeatedly shown. Council elections are coming up and it is time to show these particular worthies the door.
