The Shoalhaven Professional Business Association's (SPBA) professional snapshot was held in Ulladulla and Nowra early this month and deemed to be the most successful program to date.
This program has been operating for 11 years and is run in close collaboration with the SPBA and Shoalhaven City Council, supported by the University of Wollongong Shoalhaven campus.
SPBA professional snapshot consists of local businesses opening their doors to Year 10 school students and giving them a real taste of the career opportunities available in the Shoalhaven.
Industries represented included engineering, law, accounting, human resources, allied health, mental health, disability services, defence support, valuing, surveying, town planning, business and financial services and photography.
The Professional Snapshot committee met last week for a debrief and are extremely happy with this year's snapshot which showed Nowra had 90 per cent attendance rate and Ulladulla 85 per cent.
Given that Ulladulla was a pilot program, the businesses and students were extremely engaged.
Trent Hilaire, the director of 'Hill to Air' photography, who participated in the program in 2015 as a student and this year as a business representative, said the program was an essential part of the transition process into students' senior years of secondary education.
"Allowing an opportunity for students to experience firsthand, what it could be like to work in a sector they are interested in and gain key insights from local industry leaders within the community," Trent said.
"When I was in Year 10 the Professional Snapshot actually made me switch from my once 'set-in-stone idea' of working in the health industry to following a more engineering and science-based path that I am still currently pursuing in the form of a Bachelor degree in Computer Science.
"Coming from someone who has experienced the Professional Snapshot from both sides, as a student and now as a business owner, I can see the vital role it played in assisting in subject selection at school.
"This greatly increased my ability to get into university and eased the difficulty of finding my desired career path.
"I highly recommend the SPBA Professional Snapshot and hope to be a part of many more in the future."
The students enjoyed taking part in the program.
"Very interesting and intriguing topics; information will help out later on in life," one student said.
Another student said it was really engaging and they had the opportunity to actually put in practice some of what we had learned.
"I loved it, very engaging and interesting," another student said.
One student said it was good they could ask questions and get quality answers.
''Interesting, engaging, potentially eye-opening and helped direct me," was another student's response.
SPBA would like to thank all the businesses who helped us bring the program to students this year and we look forward to 2021.
