Fire permits, from Wednesday April 1, will no longer be required for the Shoalhaven Local Government Area.

NSW RFS Superintendent Mark Williams, said all members of the public must still abide by the law when conducting hazard reduction burns.

"Even though a fire permit is no longer a requirement, residents must still notify their neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning," he said.

"People should also check whether they need a Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Certificate, and have sufficient equipment to control and contain the fire to their property.

"Despite these milder conditions, there is always the potential for fires to threaten life, property and the environment, if not managed correctly."

He said the local community should not become complacent to the danger of bush fire now that the danger period is officially over, as there are still large pockets of un-burnt bush.

All residents are encouraged to take the opportunity of the cooler months to prepare their families and home now, ready for next fire season.

"The 2019/2020 Bush Fire Season has been horrific, with significant impact in the Shoalhaven and across NSW," Superintendent Williams said.

"I would like to acknowledge the extremely hard work and outstanding effort by all involved, be it from front line firefighters through to the essential support services and other agencies who all came together to combat the incident.

"I would also like to acknowledge the community who not only adhered to the advice and warnings that were issued but also have shown amazing support of our firefighters", Superintendent Williams added.

"Your local fire station or Fire Control Centre can provide advice on how to safely undertake hazard reduction work, and how best to prepare yourself, your property and your family for the next bush fire season."
