Mitchum is one of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation (RASF) 2020 Rural Scholarship recipients.
The RASF Rural Scholarship program provides financial grants of $6,000 for full-time study and $3,000 for part-time study to assist students who are passionate about contributing to the future of rural and regional communities.
Mitchum is currently studying his penultimate year of medicine at the University of NSW.
He has relocated to the UNSW Rural Clinical School in Port Macquarie to broaden his experience in rural medicine.
Mitchum says he appreciates the positive role rural doctors play in their community, being more than just healthcare professionals.
The scholarship program, which is awarded to regional and rural students studying at a NSW university or TAFE, aims to support those seeking further education with the goal of injecting their new skills back into rural areas.
This year the RASF granted 72 scholarships to students across a variety of fields in NSW.

RASF Manager, Cecilia Logan , believes all 2020 scholarship recipients are particularly well-deserving and represent a bright future for rural and regional areas.
"It is not an easy task to uproot your life and relocate to reach your goals. However, it is often the journey regional and rural NSW students have to undergo to achieve further education and training," Mrs Logan said.
"The Rural Scholarship program was designed to support this journey; giving students the freedom to study without the stress and financial challenges brought about by the need to relocate.
"Each recipient announced today is a tremendous ambassador for country NSW, and we look forward to following their progress as they work towards achieving their goals."
The RAS Rural Scholarships offer financial grants of $6,000 for full-time study and $3,000 for part-time study to assist students who are passionate about contributing to the future of rural and regional communities.
This year the RASF has invested over $400,000 in Rural Scholarships, the JB Fairfax Award for Regional and Rural Journalism and Communications and the Sydney Royal Wine Study and Assessment scholarships.
