The New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) reports the final week of July brought unprecedented rainfall and wind, which much of the region had not experienced in some time.

The accumulated rainfall of 352.2mm and winds with gusts of up to 113kmph at Ulladulla, saw local units respond to 297 requests for assistance during a seven-day period.

Tracy Provest, NSW SES Ulladulla Unit Commander, reports that 59 local volunteers attended multiple calls to flooding, roof damage and fallen trees.

"We also had the backing of six out of area teams of SES volunteers, Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue," Tracy said.

"We'd like to acknowledge our volunteers who put in four, 12 hours days to deal with the high volume of requests for assistance and then remained on call over the following seven days, with many doing multiple shifts in trying conditions."

An example of the good work of local volunteers, was the response to a fallen tree in Mollymook.

A large tree fell neatly between two houses, while taking out the common fence (see below).

"This tree caused no damage to either house, coming down in the smallest of gaps between the two buildings," Tracey said.

"While not all jobs are physical, a lady who had been through the recent bushfires required assistance as the fire damaged trees on her property had now fallen blocking her driveway.

"After clearing the driveway, we were able to direct her to care and put her in touch with the recovery team."

The roles of the NSW SES and its volunteers are diverse.

"We have had an extraordinary week doing what we do best - helping our community," Tracey said.

"As the weather looks challenging again this week we will be there again."

It is anticipated that the local area will receive in the order of 150mm rain over the next few days.
