Nowra was one of six centres announced by the federal government at the last election with $30 million to be invested into a network Veterans' Wellbeing Centres in Darwin, Townsville, Perth, Adelaide and Wodonga.

RSL NSW has announced RSL LifeCare as its preferred option after the board assessed the business case put forward by the working party.

The RSL NSW board has now submitted a business case for the establishment of the Nowra centre to the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

"The board emphasised the importance of ongoing local engagement and project oversight," a RSL NSW spokesperson said.

"This project offers an exciting opportunity for veterans and current serving personnel."

The "criticality of the proposed consortium approach led by RSL LifeCare on behalf of RSL NSW" was also expressed along with "the possibility of replicating such a sustainable model in other locations".

RSL NSW will now await DVA's decision on the business case and the $5 million grant towards the centre.

It is understood if the business case is accepted the new centre would be built on RSL LifeCare's facility at Wallace Street, Nowra.

There, RSL LifeCare, runs Jonathan Rogers GC House at Dumaresq Village - a living community for 68 seniors who require high care, low care, residential aged care including dementia or nursing home services.

The village has an around-the-clock presence with registered nurses and care assistants and is designed for people who need medical/rehabilitative and restorative care.

A Department of Veterans' Affairs spokesperson said the Veterans' Wellbeing Centres will put veterans and their families first by involving the organisations that currently provide them with services and support.

"DVA has worked with local groups, including the NSW Office for Veterans' Affairs, the Returned and Services League (RSL) and other ex-service organisations to understand the services currently available and the ongoing needs of veterans and their families in the Nowra region," the spokesperson said.

At this stage a final delivery date for the Nowra centre has not been determined.
