The position was decided by open vote of councillors, he was supported seven votes to six.
Crs Mitchell Pakes, Greg Watson, Patricia White, John Wells, Mark Kitchener, Andrew Guile and Bob Proudfoot voted for Greg Watson, while Crs Joanna Gash, Nina Digiglio, Annette Alldrick, Kaye Gartner, John Levett and Amanda Findley voted for the Cr John Levett to be the next deputy mayor.

Cr Watson will remain a deputy mayor until the next council elections are held in September 2021.
Cr Patricia White, the previously deputy mayor, was made assistant deputy mayor. Cr Mitchell Pakes was elected chair of the Development and Environment Committee and Cr Wells was reelected chair of the Strategy and Assets Committee.
At the meeting there was also debate over whether the Shoalhaven Sports Board should be disbanded, after the staff recommended it, but the majority of councillors voted to keep the board.
