Playing for the St George District Cricket Club, Phillips smashed six boundaries and five sixes on his way to 94 runs off 84 balls.
His knock, along with 29 from Ulladulla's Tom Engelbrecht, guided St George to 6/274 from their 50 overs against Penrith at Howell Oval.
But it didn't prove to be enough, as the hosts reached the target (8/275) with two balls to spare - despite 2/29 from Engelbrecht.
Elsewhere in the opening round of the one-day competition, Campbelltown-Camden, headlined by Norths' Philip Wells, had a loss to Northern District.
Batting first, the visitors at Raby Oval posted 6/267, before the Ghosts could only muster 8/233 from their allocated overs - with Wells contributing nine.
