The seven-time Supercars champion, and several Triple Eight crew members, were booted out of their home state after returning from the Bathurst 1000 last week.

Whincup drove a Red Bull Holden trailer back into Queensland and says he was initially given the all-clear to do so with a freight pass.

The 37-year-old was in Queensland for four days before being told to return to NSW and abide by COVID-19 restrictions.

"The border control situation in Queensland is constantly moving," he wrote on Twitter.

"I was fine to cross the border last Monday (October 19) returning from Bathurst, at 4pm last Friday after an investigation I was given the all clear to remain in Queensland.

"By 6pm I was asked to move to the QLD/NSW border bubble.

"I packed my bags and headed south to enjoy a forced holiday on the beautiful beaches of Kingscliff.

"We followed the rules and direction of authorities at all times and will continue to until the border reopens."

Police are investigating the incident.

"Task Force Sierra Linnet detectives are currently investigating the alleged return of a number of Queensland residents that had attended the Bathurst 1000," a Queensland Police spokesperson told AAP.

"These matters are subject to ongoing investigation and no further comment can be made until the completion of these investigations."

Whincup endured a difficult Bathurst 1000 - the last race at Mount Panorama before the Holden brand is retired at year's end.

In pairing with fellow Holden great Craig Lowndes, Whincup crashed out of the great race after just 33 laps when he hit a wall attempting a bold overtaking move.

He will continue driving next season as Triple Eight prepares to transfer to racing with Chevrolet Camaros in 2022, in place of Commodores.
