Pucovski, 22, has focused predominantly on red-ball cricket early in his young career in an approach that has brought him close to wearing the baggy green.

The youngster will now bolster the Stars' batting line-up as they seek redemption for last season's rain-affected BBL final defeat to the Sydney Sixers.

"I think I was just ready to take that next step with the Twenty20 stuff," Pucovski told reporters.

"With how the summer is panning out, being around professional environments the whole time was something I thought would be really beneficial.

"I'd never ruled out playing Twenty20 cricket, I just thought that across the last couple of years it probably wasn't the right time.

"If I look at my strengths in (T20s), I'll probably be at the top and try to anchor an innings."

Pucovski made his first class debut for Victoria in February 2017 and has made four centuries in 20 matches.

He has dealt with multiple concussions during his career and has previously taken time away from the game to focus on his mental health.

Pucovski is in Adelaide with Victoria's Sheffield Shield squad and is expected to bat at No.3 against South Australia in the match starting on Friday.

His close relationship with Stars coach David Hussey made signing with the team an easy decision.

"Will is an exceptional young talent who has been talked about at the highest levels for some time now," Hussey said.

"While he's spent the majority of his time so far in red ball cricket, we know he wants to continue to grow his game in all formats and we look forward to supporting him this season."

The Stars have been busy this off-season, losing Peter Handscomb to the Hobart Hurricanes and trading Dan Worrall to the Adelaide Strikers for Billy Stanlake.

They are yet to sign an international player for the coming season but general manager Nick Cummins expected to have news on that front "in the coming fortnight".
