The preferred route is the same one identified as the existing bypass corridor in the Shoalhaven Local Environmental Plan.
It will be approximately 13 km long and go from the north of Milton to the north of Burrill Lake.
Transport NSW said the existing corridor route would maximise the amount of traffic using the bypass and have lower impacts on environmentally sensitive areas, avoiding greater impacts to native vegetation and wetlands.
South Coast MP Shelley Hancock said the bypass had been a long time coming and expects a lot of community feedback.
"The original route was gazetted in 1997 so it really is time we took the plunge and started to do some real work on that project," Mrs Hancock said.
"The community will have a lot to say over the next few months about the route and it is the original route and we want to hear what they have to say especially about Canberra Crescent but I've spoken to the Minister and RMS and I'm sure it will be fine.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said they expect the community consultation report to be back by the first quarter of next year.
If you'd like to be involved with the community consultation head to https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/projects/milton-ulladulla-bypass/index.html.
Transport for NSW will start work on the Environmental Assessment once there is more detail on the design features.
