Over the next two weeks or so a lot of us will be taking a well-earned break, and in many cases hoping to put 2020 behind us.
What a year - bushfires, floods, a pandemic, more floods - you name it we've all endured it.
But as we head into the holiday period please take care on our roads. Don't become a statistic. And an unwanted statistic at that.
Last week the South Coast Police District kicked off what is going to be an ongoing, high-visibility operation on our roads and in our region until February.
Operation Summer Safe started last week and unfortunately it already appears people are not heeding the many, many warnings we have had from our police over the years.
The operation targets anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related violence and driving offences between Nowra and Batemans Bay, as well as compliance with public health orders. More than 50 charges were laid throughout the South Coast between last Thursday and Saturday!
Random breath and drug tests are also high on the police's list. And our police will continue to conduct regular patrols, with particular attention to be paid to our coastal towns with the influx of visitors and the weather warming up.
As Southern Region Operations Manager, Detective Superintendent Kevin McNeil, said "we know people are keen to support our regional towns, but I cannot stress enough how important it is that people do so safely."
Follow the road rules and all our general laws and everyone will have a good Christmas together. We and police don't want to see carnage on our roads, senseless acts of violence, drug or alcohol fuelled incidents.
And of course, even though things seem to be going okay on the COVID front, remember to adhere to venues' COVID safety plans, ensure you are physically distancing, and follow public health guidelines.
