About 3pm February 23, emergency services were called to the corner of the Princes Highway and Wason Street, Ulladulla, following reports a pedestrian had been hit by a truck as he was attempting to cross the highway.

The man was initially reported to be in a critical condition but despite efforts of local medical personnel and NSW Ambulance Paramedics died at the scene.

Officer in Charge of Bay and Basin Police Station, Acting Inspector Luke Geradts, praised the efforts of staff of a nearby medical centre and community members who came to the man's aid.

"Unfortunately despite the assistance of local community members and staff from the nearby Ulladulla Endoscopy and Medical Centre and ambulance paramedics, nothing could be done for the man," Acting Inspector Geradts said.

The male truck driver, a 34-year-old from Ulladulla, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the crash but police say no action will be taken against the truck driver.

Officers from South Coast Police District established a crime scene at the crash site and the Princes Highway was closed in both directions for several hours following the accident.

Diversions were in place on Green Street, Camden Street and Deering Street in both directions for light vehicles.

Initially there were no diversions for heavy vehicles, which were later permitted to travel on the back streets through Ulladulla.

The highway was reopened to traffic around 9pm.
