YOU just know the Mid South Coast Sub Branch of the Military Brotherhood Military Motorcycle Club is going to do good things for the community.
The Mid South Coast Sub Branch on Saturday, July 17 was officially endorsed and the group's members intend to help as many people in the community as possible - particularly ones with a military connection.
Nathan 'Brick' Darvill is the group's president and Luke 'Cunners' Cunningham is the vice president.
Both played a key role in starting the group.
Luke was a member of the Sydney Branch and Nathan a member of the Canberra Branch and they wanted to establish the Mid South Coast Sub Branch of the Military Brotherhood.
Nathan, a relatively new Ulladulla resident, got together with Luke and plans started to progress.
"Then it was just a matter of working out who was around - it's a naval area and so there are a lot of serving and ex-serving people around," Nathan said.
The group needed five full-service members to start off with which had to be military [serving or ex-serving] and an executive committee was also formed.
Nathan said they have 22 full members which include military, ex-military, supporters of the military, spouses and two children [junior members] are part of the sub-branch as well.
"For me, it was not about making a huge massive motorcycle club of any means," he said
"It's an avenue for having like-minded people who have served in the military or are supporters of the military coming together to ride their motorcycles.
"Also there is the brotherhood factor - having people you can rely on in the good and the bad times."
People who don't ride motorcycles can join but in general, members either ride or have an interest in motorcycles.
Brotherhood is a strong part of the organisation, particularly for people out of the military as Nathan went to explain.
"We have all seen operational service or seen things we can't take back and it's really important for our mental health that we have a support network around us," he said.
"It really does make it easier to get through the day knowing you can jump on a messenger or phone for a chat."
He added spouses and partners were also an important part of the support network.
Getting together socially is also important to the brotherhood.
The group is involved in RSL LifeCare and takes part in the Visit a Vet program and is working with other similar groups in Nowra, Eden and Merimbula.
Brotherhood members go into retirement centres to visit veteran and war widows
"We just spend some time with them, have a chat and just give them some joy in their day," Nathan said.
The group also does community barbecues [Bunnings - Milton Markets] which raises money so the group can donate to charities - particularly where veterans are involved.
The brotherhood had an "endorsement day" on Saturday which Nathan said was amazing.
"It was amazing because there has never been a sub-branch down at the mid South Coast and for us, we started with nobody but to get where we are today took a lot of hard work from a lot of people," he said.
He said "endorsement day" was a testament to all their hard work.
They went on a big loop ride up through Nerriga, Tarago out to Braidwood back to Batemans Bay and then to Ulladulla.
There was a handover of an endorsement certificate from a member of an established sub-branch in Braidwood.
The Canberra Sub Branch's vice president, Thai Charlie, handed over the endorsement certificate.
Nathan was in the Royal Australian Navy [RAN] for nearly 20 years.
Ryan 'Jax' Watt is the group's secretary and is coming up to 23-years in the RAN. He is happy to be part of the brotherhood.
"I wanted to give back to the community and give back to people," Ryan said
He added it was a good way to connect and talk to vets and old shipmates like Nathan. Ryan is looking forward to going to and speaking to veterans as part of the RSL Care program.
David Love is another proud member of the brotherhood and likes what the group wants to achieve.
Police officers and correctional staff are also welcome to join the brotherhood.
