After a slow start in messy conditions Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach due to the impact of Tropical Storm Nepartak, Wright took control with scores of 6.67 and 6.07 to beat Peru's Luca Mesinas 12.74 to 7.83.
It means Wright, from Culburra Beach, will meet Brazil's Italo Ferreira in the semi-final, the winner moving into the gold medal showdown.
Ferreira pulled off a spectacular aerial move in his quarter-final against Japan's Hiroto Ohhara, earning a 9.73 score to win 16.30 to 11.90.
Gerroa's Sally Fitzgibbons can make it a medal double this afternoon, if she can make it through her quarter finals.
The medal rounds have been scheduled for Tuesday. It's first time surfing has been at the Olympic Games.
