THE Milton Public School community held their first R U OK? day recently and it proved to be a great success.
The day was for students and staff alike and the focus was on creating community awareness around mental health and teaching the students the R U OK? message.
Gold coin donations were collected on the day for R U OK? charity and for the local homeless shelter Safe Waters, Ulladulla.
The school community raised $285 for the R U OK? charity and $285 to Safe Waters.
Everyone wore the yellow/orange colours to represent the R U OK? charity.
The staff enjoyed a coffee cart and yoga session in the morning.
The students were taught lessons on how to be a good friend, and how to check in on their friends.
What is R U O K Day?
Thursday 9 September, 2021 is the group's national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, "Are you OK?" and support those struggling with life's ups and downs.
R U OK? is a harm prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives.
Our work focuses on building the motivation, confidence and skills of the help-giver - the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life.
R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention efforts by encouraging people to invest more time in their personal relationships and building the capacity of informal support networks - friends, family and colleagues - to be alert to those around them, have a conversation if they identify signs of distress or difficulty and connect someone to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis.
