Without a doubt the rules that apply with the current COVID stay-at-home orders are confusing for many.

I'm not surprised because what applies to one area, is not the same for another.
The rules of Greater Sydney, including Wollongong and the Blue Mountains, have varied from regional NSW. The term 'hot spot LGAs' seems to be increasingly misinterpretted. Then there are some regional areas that are out of lockdown while their neighbouring regional Local Government Areas may still be in lockdown.
The news of restrictions in different states can also add to the uncertainty of what a person can or can't do in the area in which they live. And then there are the differences between current restrictions and those that applied with the first shutdown at the start of the COVID pandemic in March 2020.
We have been running a variety or explainers in recent weeks to help people navigate the rules, with a specific focus on what is applicable on the South Coast under the current restictions. There are explainers on outdoor recreation, how to show proof of vaccine and more.

All of this should give you a better understanding of what you can and can't do in your LGA. Of course, just when you think you have a grasp of the situation the rules change again.
All the information and varying directives can easily become a lot of white noise.
However, the response from some people to an article we recently published about the school holidays, the weather to be anticipated, and encouraging families to get outside to enjoy the great outdoors, was a little concerning.
Most concerning was the suggestion by some that people could not go outdoors because of the stay-at-home order. Yes they are correct, we are currently under stay-at-home orders in this region, but we are allowed to go out for fresh air, exercise and recreation. Furthermore, there is no limit on how long we can be in the great outdoors. Such time restrictions are confined to the 12 hotspot LGAs of greater Sydney.
And as of September 27 outdoor public pools across the state will be re-opened.
There are a few conditions that apply to the local freedoms - and these vary depending on whether you are fully vaccinated, or not. But the positive is that you can head outside.
In fact, with the impact of ongoing restrictions and the stress of COVID on the mental wellbeing of many, a breath or two...or more of fresh air is just what could be needed for people of all ages.
So why not head outside for a walk, a ride, a hike, a swim. Enjoy the sand on your feet, the fresh air in your lungs and the sounds of the birds and crashing waves. You can even enjoy some outdoor school holiday fun with your children.
Better still, under slightly eased restrictions from September 13 the new picnic rule means you can catch up with five other people from other households - provided all are fully vaccinated - for some outdoor fun and recreation. That has to be good for the heart, the soul, and mental wellbeing.
There are a few things to remember.
- You cannot leave you LGA (unless your travel takes you no more than five kilometres from your home).
- You must have a mask with you at all times, and are required to wear it when not exerting yourself, eating or drinking.
- You must carry proof of identification.
- If you are in a group of five from different households you must have proof that you have been vaccinated.
