The data has been released by NRMA Insurance it the latest edition of its Wild Weather Tracker, and ahead of the start 'Storm Season' - traditionally October to March.
The NRMA Insurance home claims data shows the huge impact of storm and hail damage on NSW with 28,000 storm and hail claims recorded in the 12 months to September 2021, or almost 60 per cent of all home claims.
Over 80 per cent of these claims occurred in the six-month 'Storm Season' period, which kicks off in October and ends in March.
Albion Park took out top spot for the NSW suburb most affected by storm and hail damage over winter, and came in fifth for most impacted suburb in the state over the last year, according to insurance claims.
The second NRMA Wild Weather Tracker also features research of 1000 NSW residents which found:
- Residents of Illawarra and the South Coast feel less prepared than they did in autumn and are now the 10th best prepared region in the state, with a self-assessed preparedness score of 58/100 (falling 6 places and 9 points from May 2021).
- Nearly three quarters (72 per cent) of NSW residents are worried natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe (up from 65 per cent in May 2021)
- 78 per cent of NSW residents believe climate change is making severe weather and natural disasters worse (up from 70 per cent in May 2021)
- Encouragingly, more NSW residents than ever (61 per cent) say they plan to take steps to prepare in the next three months.
The most impacted suburbs in Wollongong, Illawarra and Shoalhaven region over the last 12 months were*:
- Albion Park (Also the 5th most impacted town or suburb in NSW, and most impacted in NSW during winter)
- Kiama Downs (Also 2nd most impacted town or suburb in NSW during winter)
- Shell Cove (Also 4th most impacted town or suburb in NSW during winter)
- Flinders
- Woonona
- Dapto
- Oak Flats
- Ulladulla
- Bomaderry
- Figtree & Helensburgh (equal)
