Turia has been announced a NSW finalist, with the winner to be revealed on Monday, November 7.
The NSW Award recipients will then join recipients from all other states and territories as finalists for the national awards, which will be held in Canberra on January 25, 2017.
Turia joins Deng Adut, a refugee and lawyer from Redfern, Stan Grant, a reconciliation champion from Annandale and Dr Jordan Nguyen, a biomedical engineer in the running for the award.
National Australia Day Council CEO, Mr Chris Kirby, said the NSW finalists are among 131 great Australians being recognised as state and territory finalists.
"The Australian of the Year Awards allow us to recognise and celebrate the achievements of outstanding Australians – people making extraordinary contributions to our society," Mr Kirby said.
“The NSW Award finalists are remarkable group of people from many walks of life who inspire us with their drive and commitment.”
