The ‘Soup and Slice’ event was a hit with more than 50 people filling the room.
“We discussed cybercrime with mature people and they were very open to listening and asking question on the topic,” Inspector Charman-Horton said.
“It was wonderful to be able to talk to them because there are so many troubles these days with electronic devices that make life easier, but we need to be more mindful in how we use them.”
Insp Charman-Horton highlighted examples of scams people should lookout for.
“Unless you know exactly who they are do not provide personal details like phone numbers, emails, bank account numbers or your date of birth. Once they are combined it becomes a picture of who you are,” she said.
“Be careful of what you put on social networking sites. Sometimes you can provide too much information just by talking about your life. People can see pictures of your house and street, or see where you have gone on holidays.
“There is also the emotional side of scams where people play at your heart strings or make you a wonderful offer, which really is too good to be true.
“If it is a legitimate business ask for any offers by mail so you can access it properly.”
Insp Charman-Horton said not to avoid using using the internet, but stressed people be careful and aware of scams.
