Despite the Shoalhaven being relatively fire-free this summer, volunteer firefighters from Milton, Lake Tabourie, Kioloa and Bawley have been fighting fires in catastrophic conditions.
Milton Rural Fire Brigade captain Bob Milo said it they faced difficult conditions during his four-day deployment.
“There was two strike teams from the Shoalhaven, stationed at different locations including Mudgee, Lithgow, Coonabarabran and Katoomba,” he said.
“The biggest issue was the heat. It was 47 degree days and you just couldn’t hide from it.”
“There was high winds and heavy levels of smoke making conditions difficult.”
Mr Milo said travelling to combat fires in regions across the state is common when catastrophic conditions are declared.
“If we do have a fire in the Shoalhaven, members from brigades across the state will come here to help us as well,” he said.
Mr Milo wished to remind Milton-Ulladulla residents to ensure their home and property is always fire safe.
“Prevention is key,” he said.
“Make sure your homes is as prepared as possible for any fire.”
