The Lions Ulladulla District Community Foundation (LUDCF) signed the construction contract with Hotondo Homes in Ulladulla on Friday, June 16.
This important milestone, in what has been an enormous community wide effort, paves the way for construction to begin.
“Action has already taken place and commencement of work will begin early next week,” Harbourside Homes and Construction trading as Hotondo Homes managing director Chris Harley said.
The project has been in the pipeline for years, after a small but dynamic group of women began the fight to build a local respite home for the youths of the region with disabilities in 2005.
Over the years, local service groups have helped championed the caused by establishing The Lions – Ulladulla District Community Foundation.
The group’s mission is to support local needs within the community. As their first project the group selected to push for the development of the Jindelara disability respite house.
The battle has gained traction in the last 12 months following funding grants from federal, state and local government, along with significant fundraising efforts and donation from Lions Club International, Rotary Club of Milton-Ulladulla, Milton Ulladulla Apex Club and the generosity of local community.
“Numerous people said we couldn’t do it, but we have,” LUDCF president Brian Thompson said.
“We have been very fortunate that everybody has come together and we are now able to build this cottage.
“By far the biggest local fundraising contributor we have had has been the Lions preloved bookstore.”
The five-bedroom facility will provide disability care for the parents and carers of local children and young adults with disabilities.
The home will provide easy access to allow families care close to home without having to travel.
Previously, carers had to travel to Nowra to access similar services, which have extensive waiting lists.
