Okay, now the joke is over. By this time in winter 2016 we had already seen 10 sessions go down at places like Kamikaze, plenty of early morning potties, more than enough Golfie surfs to even stimulate Todd "Mr Golfie" Evans and a few days where the waves were so big the only place you could surf was on the internet. Fast forward one year and our winter swells have had about as much intensity as being slapped in the face with an afro of fairy floss. As we progress through the year, hopefully something will kick into gear and the next episode won't be as tragic. Looking at the forecast though, I wish I was about to jump on a plane for Indonesia instead of wrestling three-foot east swells – first world problems I guess.
Friday was easily the best day of the week and even though it wasn't enough to fully ignite our reefs from their wintery solace, it did have flashes of what can happen at Collers reef. Peter Pan aka Peter Meyers found himself lucky enough to be amongst the action where he collected a few nice rides for himself and everyone else to witness. He bounced all over the waves like a half-blown balloon escaping the lips from an unsuccessful attempt of blowing it up. The bubble didn't burst for our Peter as he continued to float over the sections like a season pro.
Some cool news for friends and family of the late Carrey Klein. For those of you who may not of known Cazza, he was a founding member of Ulladulla Boardriders and was part of our surfing folklore here for the past 40 years. He sadly passed away in March. After a few consolations with local council we will be erecting a bench in his honour at his favourite surf spot Golf Course Reef. So in a few short weeks with thanks to UBC, Mollymook Long boarders, family and friends we will have a very cool bench where we can view the surf from whilst enjoying the feeling of Cazza around us.
Young superstar Sophia Fulton has done it again, making consecutive finals over in South Africa this time she walked away or should I say surfed her way into third place at the Volkswagen South African open. It was pretty controversial though as many had her as a clear winner. She is now preparing for her next event the Jordy Smith Cape Town pro in Cape Town which should be an epic battle for her. Currently sitting at 54 on the ratings another solid result could catapult her into the top 40 on the WQS rankings.
Matt Wilkinson just pocketed himself a cool US $100,000 for his effort in Fiji where he came out on top at the Outerknown pro. It was a full goofy-foot final where Matt Wilko went one better than last year's result to bag the title ahead of rookie sensation Connor O'Leary. The two went hard at it and by the 3/4 mark it looked like Connor would claim his maiden win but a very focused and determined Wilko held it together till the last few minutes to score a high 8-point ride to secure the title.
