Dr Binod Sharma is a student supported by a Jennie Thomas fellowship at Newcastle University, completing his PHD, Improving Remote and Rural Maternal Health in Nepal. Jennie is the life governor of the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
David Young visited Nepal with Dr Binod in 2016 to video a unique educational intervention strategy for improving maternal health outcomes through song.
Maternal mortality in remote, rural, mountain villages in Nepal is one of the worst in the world. Lack of knowledge and awareness of the special needs of pregnant women are contributing factors, as are the distance and difficult terrain to access medical assistance when needed.
Song and dance are common place in rural Nepal and the group developed 28 songs use as part of the education program.
